Track By Tracks: Cløudy Skies - Bury Me Beneath The Stars (2026)
Some albums are born out of a visceral need to escape reality. For this record, everything started with the music: the songs, arrangements, and sonic architecture were fully crafted before a single lyric was written. The sound dictated the imagery, as if the music itself birthed the stories. I then spent weeks immersed in writing, crafting the lyrics to clothe this atmospheric ether and capture that very specific, almost weightless texture that defines our universe.
The album was conceived as a single dream with a thousand facets and moods. A nocturnal crossing where soft fantasies, buried fears, flashes of life, the quiet shadow of death, and an irrepressible need to take flight all intersect.
It all started with the title track, Bury Me Beneath the Stars, the very first song written for this record. I wanted to give it an ethereal, spellbinding aura — guided by my Old Blood Noise Endeavors and Strymon pedals — to match its narrative of cosmic farewell and memory. I was chasing that weightless grace found in Slowdive (Sugar for the Pill) or the abyssal depth of Deserta, while blending in the raw, cathartic bite of Deafheaven or Oathbreaker.
Then came Fluffy Darkness, more rhythmic and jagged, yet dressed in those same predominant clean guitars. Once these two tracks were laid down in the studio, the framework of the album revealed itself to Lionel and me as an absolute certainty. The rest flowed naturally, as if the dream were dictating its own soundtrack.
My obsession was to give our clean tones the actual texture of a dream: a floating, immersive, and infinitely vast medium designed as an invitation to journey elsewhere. In fact, Lionel and I spent far more time sculpting these clean tones than shaping our distortions, because that’s where the true cathartic magic of Cløudy Skies lies.
Track-by-Track
1. Fluffy Darkness:
Theme & Inspiration: Nocturnal anxiety, insomnia, and liminal spaces, inspired by French sci-fi/fantasy literature, particularly the universe of Daniel Walther.
Track Analysis: As the second pillar of the album, this song sets a more jagged and rhythmic pace. It tells the story of a journey aboard a phantom train through an almost organic darkness ("fluffy darkness"). The enveloping clean guitars contrast with nighttime paralysis and the ominous presence lurking in the shadows.
2. Depth Spell:
Theme & Inspiration: The myth of the siren and the vertigo of the deep, born from a nostalgic childhood memory: Underwater Love by Smoke City (1997) and the iconic aquatic Levi's commercial—a favorite I'm still obsessed with. It explores that same idea of love as a poetic drown, a surreal surrender, and a hypnotic dive into the abyss.
Track Analysis: Clocking in at 10:24, this epic track gathers all the core elements of the album: aggressiveness, contemplation, and total immersion. A sensory dive where the narrator succumbs to the call of the abyss. Between the ballet of air bubbles, the loss of orientation, and that hypnotic gaze pulling him under, the song transforms drowning into a gentle, tragic, and poetic surrender. The official music video was crafted in this exact cinematic, underwater, and hypnotic spirit.
3. Living Inside a Dream:
Theme & Inspiration: Absolute weightlessness and the continuation of the voyage.
Track Analysis: Written entirely by me, this instrumental piece serves as a direct extension of Depth Spell. It is an ambient track built on layers of dreamy synths and soaring sampled pedal steel guitars. It acts as a suspended transition in the ether before moving forward.
4. Lights of the Night:
Theme & Inspiration: The enigmatic muse, directly inspired by the cinema of Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch.
Guest: Keijo Niinimaa (Rotten Sound).
Track Analysis: A tribute to the fascinating, alluring female figures of the silver screen. Whether she appears as a spirit, a siren, or a mystical halo in the trees, she guides or leads the narrator astray in the night. Keijo Niinimaa’s raw vocals inject a striking tension into this cinematic backdrop. The music video fully embraces this Lynchian atmosphere, opening with a direct tribute scene referencing the famous quote from Twin Peaks: The Return ("We are like the dreamer, who dreams and then lives inside the dream. But who is the dreamer?").
5. Bury Me Beneath the Stars:
Theme & Inspiration: Stardust, memory, and the desire for celestial eternity.
Guest: Chris Richard (Nature Morte).
Track Analysis: The founding core of the album. The story of a wandering soul guided by neon lights and night ghosts, asking to be returned to the starry sky once the journey concludes. Chris Richard’s guest feature brings added emotional weight to this centerpiece, where delicate cloudscapes meet post-black fury.
6. Birdsong:
Theme & Inspiration: The longing for flight, absolute freedom, and the breath of nature.
Track Analysis: Positioned right after the title track, Birdsong acts as a return to earth while gazing up at the sky. Entirely written by Lionel on synthesizers, the track builds a floating atmosphere where the bird's song becomes a guiding voice through ancient forests, embodying a celestial grace that we contemplate with nostalgia, knowing we can never fully capture it.
7. A Room for Dreams (Bonus Track)
Theme & Inspiration: Catharsis through imagination, mental sanctuary, and inner healing.
Track Analysis: Although featured as a bonus track, this piece completes the circle and transforms the album into a full journey. It opens the door to a safe space where the mind can float weightlessly, away from the heaviness of reality. Swirling melodies and ethereal textures transform melancholy into healing, gently closing the book on this waking dream.
