Interviews: AV Sunset
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or came out just like that?
The band name: We struggled with it for a bit, and spent a lot of time overthinking it and generally making fun of each other’s terrible ideas. Eventually we settled on repurposing a working title for one of the tracks from our first album. We like the ambiguity/mystery of it. Much like our songs, it can mean what you want it to mean.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
It came about because of our common musical interests. When you all love 65daysofstatic, and all love Mogwai, and all love Russian Circles, it happens organically. We didn’t set out to be like those bands, but we love what they do, and that’s reflected in what we do. Also, we were all tired of writing more conventional vocal-led songs and liked the idea of the freedom that you have when writing instrumental music.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
No, we gradually came together, recruited one by one by our guitarist Ed via various online message boards.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Lots of different things. Sometimes it’s when we discover a new album, sometimes it’s when we revisit an old album we love, sometimes it’s a mood, sometimes it’s a chance encounter. When you feel that motivation to write, you have to grab it with both hands and make the most of it.
6. Where was your last gig?
A little pub in Peterborough, UK, called The Ostrich. It was a punk and alternative weekender with a tiny little stage where the audience was on top of us. The energy was fantastic, and the audience was really responsive. The kind of gig that delivers above expectations.
7. Where would you like to act?
ArcTanGent festival. It’s full of like-minded people, our style fits the bill there, and almost every band we hold in high esteem has played there over the years.

No one, we're all friends here!
10. Has any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
I don’t think so. Not for a long time anyway. The key is to practice, practice, practice, practice. You have to be able to nail your part every time and be locked in with each other. Anything else is outside of your control, and worrying about it isn’t going to change anything for the better. Also, most audiences know how difficult it can be getting up in front of a crowd, so they’re a lot more forgiving than you might think.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
We listen to a wide range of music, but there are definite nods on the new album to some of our biggest influences, particularly Mono, 65daysofstatic, Mogwai, ISIS and Oceansize.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Nothing weird so far - we're not a big enough band for the weird stuff (yet)!
13. What do you think of your fans?
They’re very dedicated. I think the post/prog/alternative instrumental rock genre as a whole has a fanatically dedicated following. As fans of the genre ourselves, we know how important the music is to us all, and when a new band breaks into the scene, it can be very exciting. We like that excitement. We feel it too. And we want to live up to it, so it pushes us forward.
14. What do you think of our site?
It’s great. We need more sites like this, promoting the up-and-coming artists, playing their part in the scene, bringing the music to the people. Without sites like Breathing The Core, many young bands would struggle to be noticed in the sea of social algorithms.
