Interviews: The Crown Remnant
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Metal/Rock solo project The Crown Remnant from the USA. Check out this artist and follow him on his FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?
The band was initially formed from members of other bands and the name "The Crown Remnant" represented that we were all that remained from our past projects and lives. Moving forward, the band would be a refuge for creativity that would normally get rejected by other projects and later on became my own solo project, working with other musicians as needed. The name also evoked a cool medieval theme that was close to my heart and inspired our debut record, "The Wicked King" and its sequel "The End of Days".
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
I grew up listening to metal, but I also always had a really varied taste. As I started to study music more, I realized that I was inspired by great lyrics, melody, and rhythm, no matter what the genre. This is reflected in the band's music which I might describe as "Melodic Metal" - a clearly early 2000's inspired sound, but unique with multi-genre inclusions.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
The band was initially formed by strangers from different projects. We met in different ways, mostly through my job selling music equipment and teaching music lessons. The band members changed throughout the years and then during COVID turned into a solo project headed by myself, working with other musicians and artists as needed.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
The early members were inspired by groups like Killswitch Engage, Mastodon, and Trivium. As the writer for the band, I was always a big fan in the metal world of groups like Avenged Sevenfold, Brendon Small, and Atreyu, but would often delve into compositional music like Danny Elfman, and more avant-garde sounds like Mr. Bungle.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
The more I evolve as a songwriter, the more I find songs in the world every day. Pain is obviously the greatest motivator to write music, and a lot of my work is based on some type of personal, situational, or existential pain. I also find a lot of meaning in tackling topics that are important politically, historically, or socially - a la classic punk bands.
6. Where was your last gig?
The project has been in hibernation with the upcoming album and music videos but as we ramp up, there is a northwest tour in the works if we can figure out the logistics! The last gig I believe was opening for the band I Set My Friends on Fire in Los Angeles.
7. Where would you like to act?
I love the idea of playing venues across the U.S. no matter the size - so that's where I'm setting my sights!
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
If we could open for a dream band, it might be something like Ghost or Avenged Sevenfold - they both put on a killer show.
9. Whom not?
We probably wouldn't match with Taylor Swift, but you never know.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
Stage fright is common and normal, the best tip is to realize that. Nervous energy is still energy - you take that and turn it into a great show. Stay practiced, make sure to warm up, and realize that everyone there to see you want to have a good time!
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Likely the same list as the favorite band's question, but I'll also shout out Devin Townsend for taking solo metal to huge heights and Ghost for putting on a killer dramatic live show.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Someone wanted a custom trucker hat - and there's no judgment on my side! Just a fun image of someone out there in the world blasting our music while delivering produce.
13. What do you think of your fans?
They suck, who wants fans? Just kidding, they're great and we need more of them.
14. What do you think of our site?
It's always great to expose smaller metal bands to a wider audience, so for that, I give you kudos!
15. Something to add?
I'm really excited for our upcoming album "Rise of the Wicked King" - make sure to check out the single when it drops on October 27th and follow the band everywhere @thecrownremnant to stay up to date!
