Interviews: Methodica
On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Progressive Metal band Methodica from Italy. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, did you plan it or come out just like that?
Our drummer, Marco Piccoli, came across the band's name while browsing through an encyclopedia. It sounded very interesting because it’s a Latin word that can be understood even if you don’t speak English. We are very methodical in our work, from composing to arranging songs, so the band's name fits perfectly.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Well, progressive music was our favorite genre, so it was natural for us to play this kind of music when we decided to write our own songs.
Our first album, Searching for Reflections, had a very classic progressive sound, but if you listen to our later albums, you'll notice that we gradually took a different direction.
We started incorporating electronic sounds, which have now become a key part of our style, while classic progressive keyboards have taken a back seat. However, we haven’t changed the way we write songs—we believe that melody remains essential in our music.
We were simply looking for a more modern and impactful style, as our music is constantly evolving. We've found this formula by mixing industrial music and dubstep with powerful, Meshuggah-style guitar riffs—and it works like a charm.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
No, we didn’t know each other before, but we connected instantly. Methodica is more than just a band—it’s like a family.
4. Each band member's favourite band?
Our guitarist, Marco Ciscato, loves Tesseract, Northlane, and Meshuggah for their originality and innovation in progressive and metal music. Few bands sound as original and innovative as they do.
Marco Piccoli (drums) is a big fan of the Danish prog band VOLA; they are highly skilled musicians, and their songs are both complex and catchy.
Max (vocals) is a huge fan of Tesseract and Nine Inch Nails, who greatly inspire him when writing lyrics for our songs. In contrast, his singing and vocal melodies draw heavily from the airy choruses of the ’80s. Despite the stylistic differences, they blend perfectly with the music we create.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
When it comes to music, we draw inspiration from the bands we love (Tesseract, Haken, Vola, Northlane, etc.). Their modern progressive metal greatly influences our sound; however, we strive to make our style distinct and original rather than just a copy of someone else.
As for the lyrics, we take inspiration from various sources: personal experiences, books, fictional characters, the environment—everything can serve as inspiration.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gigs were some shows across Italy, and it was a lot of fun.
The next scheduled gig is Isola Rock Festival, a 4-day festival full of Italian and international bands, and we can’t wait to play there.
7. Where would you like to act?
We would like to perform again abroad, in Europe, and elsewhere. Over the years we performed with Dream Theater, Skunk Anansie, Uriah Heep, Riverside, Anathema and others; we had the chance to join Queensryche and Fates Warning to play as support act in their European tours, and it was a great experience for us.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Great question! There are a lot of artists we’d love to collaborate with. First that comes to mind is Daniel Tompkins from TesseracT, one of the best singers around, and we’d love to have him on one of our songs. Skrillex is another artist we’d like to work with, especially for the dubstep aspect of our music – we love his monster synths. The Korn album The Path of Totality, you know? Well, something like that. We’d also love to collaborate with Nine Inch Nails for their amazing industrial sound. But the list is very long.
9. Whom not?
Whom not? Uhm, hard to say. If we don’t like a genre or an artist, we simply don’t listen to them, so…
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
There’s always a bit of stage fright, even if you’ve been performing for years in front of an audience. It’s part of the game, and it’s both frightening and exciting at the same time.
Maybe the worst stage fright we ever had was in France, before our very first gig on our first European tour. Once we started playing, the anxiety disappeared, and everything went great.
How to beat it? There’s no way to beat stage fright, but you can live with it. If you’re not scared of the stage, maybe you don’t care about what you’re doing anymore, so God bless stage fright.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Well, there are plenty of bands that have influenced us over the years, from 80s pop artists to metal bands, from U2 to Meshuggah and Nine Inch Nails, and from classical music to ambient music. We listen to many different artists and genres because each of them can inspire us. We love bands that play modern prog metal (such as Northlane, Vola, TesseracT, Unprocessed, Periphery, Leprous...), as they are the most inspiring for our music. Anyway, we are working hard to create and develop our own style and sound. Experimentation is the key word for us.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Nothing weird, to be honest.
Our fans are very passionate about our music, but also very respectful and discreet.
13. What do you think of your fans?
Well, they are the best fans we could ever ask for. They support us on our social networks, comment and share, purchase our albums (we have a Bandcamp page where anyone can buy our CDs, vinyls, and merch), and often ask when we will be on tour again across Europe because they want to come to our shows. We hope to satisfy them as soon as possible.
14. What do you think of our site?
It's great, full of content about bands from all over the world, from Algeria to Zimbabwe. You’re doing a great job because you spotlight unknown bands that deserve to be discovered and appreciated by a larger audience. We believe that emerging bands and the music they create should be supported in every possible way, and your site is really helpful for that. So, keep up the great work!
15. Something to add?
