Interviews About Albums: SAD EYES - V 5en5e5 (2025)
In this new interview, we sat down with the Spanish Death Metal/Technical Death Metal band SAD EYES to ask questions about their album, "V 5en5e5".
1. What can you say about this new EP/CD?
This new EP is the fifth SAD EYES album, a project I've been working on for seven years, since
the release of vIV0, SAD EYES' previous CD. It's a conceptual project that continues the work
begun on "...And Another Week," which inaugurated the concept that continues to this day.
Musically, the EP has been a tremendous leap forward in terms of style, as this album is much
more brutal, much more technical, and faster, something I think the album needed to capture
the concept.
As with previous albums, I've continued to collaborate with collaborators from the national
scene. This time, Igor from PUTRID TORSO handled the vocals, and Carlos Leonardo recorded
the bass lines. Together, they've made my entire concept of the songs grow, change, and
transform into something that has even surprised me.
2. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?
As I mentioned, this EP is a conceptual work. But not only that, it's part of an overall concept
inherent to the other four works. Each of the works, individually, is an independent work, but
also part of a wholly conceptual work. In this sense, this "V 5en5e5" has an independent
concept, but one that is included in the concept of all SAD EYES works. It's the fifth work,
hence the importance of the number 5. Each of the five tracks deals with the way the story's
protagonist loses a sense of meaning. The suffering this leads to. His misery, his bitterness, his
disappointing life, and, above all, his way of dealing with it.
Fifth work, five senses.
3. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?
All the songs and the entire musical foundation were composed by me (Santi Gzlez), as well as
the general, independent concept for each song. From that concept, I instructed Kike Capilla to
develop a story related to each song, and then, once the story was created and written, I
personally took charge of shaping it into lyrics, a song, to later integrate it into the
instrumental part.
Obviously, having collaborators who record different instruments means that each of the parts
they play undergoes modifications, grows with their interpretation, and, of course, they have
been free to modify the parts they know would sound best.
It's a work that comes from me, but when it comes back to me, it has already grown like a child
returning to its parents' lap after discovering life's journey.
4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?
What a difficult question! It's impossible for me to separate one song to make it stand alone
when, as I mentioned, it's part of a whole. Besides, on this occasion, the EP is just over twenty-two minutes long... there's not much to separate. Anyway... since to do the promo, whether I
like it or not, I have to choose a song, and this time to make a video, well... The chosen song
was "ToVch." A song that can be a musical balance between everything that generates and
awakens the entire work.
5. Is there a special message in this EP/CD? If there is what it is?
Yes, of course, there's a special, clear, concise, and conceptual message, as I was telling you.
The EP is about an individual whose life's events, a life that has been addressed in previous
works, have led to his bewildering body, his decayed brain, and his bad luck, causing him to
lose his senses. Each track on the album shows how the individual is losing each of his senses.
It speaks to us of the suffering that leads to this and, above all, of the suffering he experiences
while his senses are being lost. The cause isn't the same in all cases, although the end is, so we
can see what leads to such a loss, what drives, disrupts, and disappoints each of the disabilities
he acquires.
6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?
I strongly recommend that anyone listening to the EP follow the lyrics along. If you have the
physical EP in your hand, you can do so since the lyrics are included, but if you're listening to
the work via streaming, you can also do so since the lyrics are available on the website
www.sadeyes.es.
Above all, it's interesting to do them simultaneously because the work is all connected, and the
music was created with the lyrics in mind, and vice versa. So everything complements each
other, making the lyrics make more sense when you listen to the music, and the music takes
on another dimension when you realize what the lyrics are saying.
I'm also unable to separate one of them to express them independently, but... the concept is
so detailed that I think you can get an idea of the dimension of each of the lyrics.
7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family,
someone you'd love to thank especially?
Music as an art and as an artistic expression cannot be separated from
inspirations—emotional, physical, religious, educational, and beliefs. In reality, what inspires
me when writing music is music itself. I mean, as a musician, music fills me so much that I
delve into the emotions it evokes and master them to create. In this sense, and since it's a
concept album, I sometimes try to do the opposite. Let me explain. I try to make the lyrics
draw me into a series of feelings and emotions that will help me create the music. The
important thing is to feel what I know the protagonist of the story is feeling, thus making
everything more believable, impactful, and emotional.
It's logical that the music I'm currently listening to strongly influences my compositions, as well
as the mood I'm working in. A person cannot separate their life from their work, because life is
what makes you feel, and when you create, you express things that, even unintentionally,
come to light.
Logically, everyone around me suffers from my passion for music. All the hours I dedicate to
music are no longer dedicated to people, for whom I will obviously be eternally grateful, both
for their patience and their continued support.
8. Something to add?
Nothing more, I just want to thank you for your support, your interest in my project, and
congratulate you on your work.
I'd also like to invite your readers to delve into the SAD EYES universe, visit the website, read
the lyrics, discover the five works, and, above all, feel, be dazzled by the capacity for suffering
they themselves can grasp and assimilate, just as the protagonist of the story does.
