Track By Tracks: BANDERSTADT - Red (2025)
Music Tempered by Battle
The band Banderstadt from Zaporizhzhia is not just a folk-rock group, but a living symbol of Ukrainian resilience. Formed in 2018, it consists of active military personnel and volunteers.
Their music, filled with the free spirit of Ukrainians and the memory of their ancestors, has become a reliable source of support for the defenders of Ukraine. The band’s songs are stories of love for Ukraine and the defense of national dignity. They are often called “kobzar rock” for their deep connection to tradition and modern interpretation.
The band’s symbolism, inspired by ancient runes, adds mystical depth and strength to their work. It emphasizes the unbroken connection between generations of warriors, who over the centuries have passed on their power and endurance.
The band’s leader, Yurii Makarenko (callsign Python), is a modern Cossack whose gaze is sharp as the blade of a sabre and whose heart is filled with the fire of struggle. He is currently defending his homeland on the front line. He is a link in a mystical chain of generations, and his strong will and boundless love for Ukraine are woven into every note of Banderstadt.
On bass — Serhii Matus (Don Juan) — in the band since its first days, a true Ukrainian and volunteer, calm outwardly but explosive within. He brings balance to the group.
On drums — Tymofii Makarenko (Hades) — a patriot, volunteer, and former member of a volunteer military formation. Thanks to him, the heart of the band always beats in the right rhythm.
Vocals and flute — Darena — a volunteer who does much to support the army and educate young people. Her magical, powerful voice and interesting musical ideas bring depth and traditional character to the compositions.
Banderstadt: The album Red — sings of resilience and the Eternal Spirit of Warriors.
At a time when Ukraine is forging its freedom in fierce battles, Banderstadt has released the album Red. Red is the spirit of defiance and faith in victory — nine tracks filled with the energy of folk-metal.
The band’s music and lyrics are an incredible fusion of the free spirit of Ukrainians, musical power, and the deep memory of their ancestors.
Archivist Records are our friends — and that is wonderful. This is a label that brings together like-minded people, and thanks to them, a whole community of creative individuals exists, realizing their artistic ideas.
In difficult times, during war, the question arises about the existence of one’s people and country. People lose their bearings, fall into doubt, and search for a way out of the whirlpool of grief and misfortune. It is like a swamp with no solid ground, pulling you down.
At such times, the ancestors come to aid — historical memory awakens, the voice of blood stirs, it speaks through the music, through the words of old Ukrainian songs, inspires new lyrics, and gives the strength to live, to fight, to love, and to win.
Before Russia’s full-scale invasion of our country, we often performed. During the war, it has become more difficult, about once every three months. We have not performed abroad yet, but we think people would enjoy it.
Rehearsals are rare — it is hard to gather as the band’s leader is an active soldier fighting for Ukraine’s freedom and independence, as befits a true Cossack. But creative work continues individually and online, and before performances, we come together and create!
BANDERSTADT:
Bander — a Ukrainian surname, etymologically from “flag” (Spanish bandera, Italian bandiera, Portuguese bandeira).
Stadt — “city” in German.
The name symbolizes the idea of Ukrainian statehood, independence, culture, patriotism, and unity with Europe.
In the near future, we have several performances planned to support the album Red. We are also creating new songs and doing everything possible for Ukraine’s victory.
Be independent and respect the independence of others! Be strong and free!
Runes and Meanings
Sea — Lagur rune: symbol of water and intuition. The sea, as an element, requires respect, attention, and caution.
Boat — Algr rune: symbol of the protection of the gods. The Zaporizhzhian Cossacks were skilled sailors. They believed in the divine protection of natural forces and that both Heaven and Water help the brave.
Sun — Sol rune: symbol of the sun and its power. The sun is one of nature’s forces. Knowing and feeling it, and adjusting one’s actions accordingly, can lead to victory.
Blood — Ass rune: symbol of knowledge, representing both darkness and light. If a person finds balance between the spiritual and material, they can reach a “divine” state.
Chumak — Raidu rune: symbol of the road in the broadest sense. It is about adapting the form and methods of warfare to progress and external factors, while the goal of achieving independence remains unchanged.
Dawn — Kaun rune: symbol of clarity and illumination. Again, it is about the balance of natural forces — after dark times, dawn always comes, and vice versa.
Poppies — Ihwar rune: symbol of the warrior and weapon. The Cossacks and Haidamakas were knights who defended their people and fought in the name of life.
Incantation — Bjarkan rune: symbol of physical and spiritual growth. If you learn to understand nature, you will become stronger and better, able to improve your own life and the lives of others. But it takes much work.
Victory — Ing rune: symbol of abundance, fertility, and the completion of a cycle. Victory requires great effort and sacrifice. When the struggle for freedom and independence bears fruit, victory becomes sacred.
