Behind The Tracks: Anders L. Rasmussen - Skyward (Single) (2025)

“Skyward” actually began its life under a different name and purpose. I originally wrote it for a songwriting competition organized by Andøya Space, called something along the lines of “Ghost…” something — the exact title escapes me now. The theme was space-related, and I wanted to capture that sense of reaching upward, of human curiosity and wonder. Even though the song didn’t make it through to the final stages of the competition, I was still very pleased with how it turned out. It felt like too good a piece to leave on the shelf, and I quickly realized it would fit naturally into the upcoming album.

Musically, “Skyward” represents exactly the kind of song I wanted it to be — uncomplicated, catchy, and driven by strong melodies. It’s got that forward motion and energy that keeps it engaging from start to finish, while still leaving room for a bit of air and lightness. The chorus didn’t come easily, though. I had to wrestle with it for a while before it really clicked. Once it did, everything else fell into place, and the song started to feel cohesive and natural, as if it had been there all along waiting to be found.

In the studio, the recording process went smoothly and quite fast — one of those sessions where everything just works. I brought in Glenn Welman, as I’ve done for all my recent tracks, to handle the drums. Glenn’s got a great sense of groove and dynamics, and even though we work remotely through Fiverr, his playing always elevates the songs and ties everything together. “Skyward” came to life exactly the way I had imagined it — uplifting, melodic, and full of drive — a song that, to me, perfectly embodies that feeling of looking up and moving forward.
