Behind The Artworks: Amenspear - Ego's Carrion (2026)
Hi! Steve here from Amenspear, thanks for reading! So the Ego's Carrion EP now has two official covers. The original reddish one with the nude figures is a painting by Johfra Bosschart called Witches' Sabbath. Now, Spotify and some other streaming services wouldn't allow the painted nudity on the first cover, so the "censored" version is a post-battle war scene by Otto Dix. In a sense, both covers are two sides of the same coin, and that's why I chose them. The lyrics of the EP were written a bit "stream of consciousness," but they loosely tell the tale of a man's descent into the darkest pits of his own desires and his crawl back out towards the Light. So in a sense, the original cover with the nude figures represents his temptations, and the censored cover represents the deadly aftermath of giving into those temptations. Now, here it is clear that the word "temptation" is being a bit sexualized, but really the lyrics can apply to any sort of temptation, whether that's drugs, money, or even giving in to one's own anger or isolation. All these are products of the ego, and the EP title is about trying to kill your ego, leaving it behind like carrion on a battlefield.
