Track By Tracks: Amenspear - Ego's Carrion (2026)
1. His Apparition:
This whole EP is a musical tribute to old school death metal, and initially, I wasn't too concerned with what the lyrical message was going to be. So, believe it or not, I actually at first took inspiration from the braggadocio of rap lyrics, I just sort of "death-metallized" them! Eventually, it was clear that a kind of story thread was forming, and His Apparition is the first piece. Now I am indeed a Christian, but the song talks about a man giving in to the devil in a moment of weakness and isolation ("winter wraps its limbs around me once again"). He goes down the path of fully giving in to his lusts. This is all phrased with the campy occult language of early death metal. Musically, you can hear the Morbid Angel influence on this track quite a bit. The first half is a non-stop barrage of fast riffs before the second half slows down into creeping, crushing, evil riffs.
2. Follow The Rats:
On Follow The Rats, we begin with a mid-paced riff before diving back into the blastbeats and tremolo riffs. This fast section continues for a while, but I think it has a lot of groove, alternating between blasts, double bass, and skank beats. A lot of cool riffs here with some discernible melody, ha! Then things stop, and we enter a slow section of creepy Middle Eastern-style sliding guitar. This leads back into the mid-paced grooves of the intro briefly before going back into the slower, sliding, creeping riffs. On top of these riffs, we have a call and response between the deep growls and some punky gang shouts, which was different for me and really cool! The lyrics continue the story in a loose way, describing a campy horror movie-style scene of this dark occult ritual. But moments of lucidity and reality begin to crack through ("300 days wasted on a Caesar, 300 nights yearning for a Christ") as our point of view character begins to realize he's not living in accordance with his potential as a human being. The song closes, and our protagonist realizes that these dark figures he once referred to as "master" or "priests" are nothing but "rats" on a ship that is going down.
3. Ego's Carrion:
This song is really cool! There's a ton of riffs and different grooves to keep the listener engaged. The first third sticks to that traditional old school death metal sound, with some cool vocal hook moments going on like a scream over spoken word, or a call and response between growls in a regular tone and another growl with a megaphone effect. Then we get a section that sounds a lot like classic era Opeth, that classic 6/8 riff sound, but alternating with blastbeats. Finally, we enter the final minutes of the song and the EP, which consists of very headbangable and chuggy mid-paced riffs. The vocals growl their final lines, and we lead into a triumphant final riff with the drums grooving away (some cool fills here!) as the music fades out. Lyrically, the song closes the story, with our protagonist reflecting on himself, essentially calling himself out on his bullshit. He calls himself "an ugly god" and says that his former "false gods" will "fester". Ultimately, the only thing for him left to do is "call on the only One above," and that's how the song ends.
