Behind The Artworks: Ravenspell - Obsidian King (2025)

The artwork by Carl Lavoie (brother of our bassist, Corvax Crowhammer) is based on Fra Angelico’s Annunciation (1438–1450) and is titled Altarpiece from a Private Sanctuary (2024). In his 1934 short story The Sanctuary, E.F. Benson describes a painting similar to Angelico’s as an unholy image hanging above a Satanists’ altar—an interpretation that inspired Lavoie’s dark rendition used for our album cover. A dark black and purple filter was applied over the original colours and the fit was perfect for our obsidian and raven-themed album. Carl Lavoie generously let us use his artwork and we are truly grateful to have such a quality work as our album cover.
