Track By Tracks: Ravenspell - Obsidian King (2025)
1. God the Watcher:
This song represents an all-seeing and all-powerful God who provides a safe and pleasant life for all who submit to Him. However, when the forces of hell are unleashed upon the earth, He becomes a wrathful and vengeful deity, seeking to punish and destroy His enemies. With Volpale the Ravenous' frenzied drumming, fast guitar riffs, and piercing high screams, the track is firmly rooted in the classic speed and power metal vibe of the ’80s and ’90s. The lyrics were co-written with long-time friend and fellow metalhead Carl Villeneuve.
2. Onwards We March:
Violent battles between opposing armies, filled with all the horror and bloodshed of medieval warfare. An up-tempo track with an epic, melodic chorus and a thrash metal feel, this one gets the mosh pit fanatics going every time.
3. Book of the Dead:
An homage to the cult 1992 film Army of Darkness, every line is a subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) reference to the movie. Corvax Crowhammer’s thunderous bass anchors this classic heavy metal track, alongside obligatory chugging rhythms, an epic solo, and powerful vocals.
4. Warrior’s 9 to 5:
Centered once again on the theme of war, this song focuses on the brutal trench battles of World War I. A hard-hitting heavy metal track with a strong chorus designed to get the crowd singing along.
5. Obsidian Wing:
A darker track, featuring the subtle presence of the organ and choir-like vocal lines. The lyrics tell the story of the Obsidian King, master of ravens and crows who rules the night. The title closely resembles the album title; we found it more interesting to separate the two. Its ternary rhythmic feel drives the music forward and allows the mighty chorus to dominate the song.
6. Hellstorm:
A fast-paced power metal song about Armageddon’s rain of flames and the end of the world. This track highlights the full range of vocal prowess Alisandr the Seer can unleash in a short span of time.
7. Raise Hell:
The drum intro is a nod to Motörhead’s Overkill, and the song maintains a straight-to-the-point, in-your-face feel throughout. Ravok Blackwing’s vocals and guitar work take center stage in the second half, while the lyrics depict rebellious and violent people whose sole goal is to wreak havoc on the world—and, of course, raise hell.
8. Relentless:
This track features a powerful, driving rhythm and an aggressive vibe that will get your head banging. Like God the Watcher, the lyrics were co-written with Carl Villeneuve and convey the importance of staying strong and standing up to the evils of the world—by any means necessary.
9. Battleaxe Apocalypse:
Don’t blink—this one’s over before you know it. The fastest (and shortest) track on the album, it depicts an apocalypse of falling battle-axes—pretty much speaks for itself.
10. Attila:
A song about one of history’s most feared conquerors, Attila the Hun. The longest track on the album, it tells the story of the Scourge of God through evolving sections—from a classical-inspired acoustic guitar intro, to doom-like, heavy verses, an epic chorus, a majestic guitar solo, and an exhilarating fast-paced instrumental section. Its role as the concluding piece was never in doubt, bringing a glorious finale to our debut album.
