Interviews: Junior VP
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Pop Rock band Junior VP from Scotland. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name?
It's a job title that you commonly find in the US. I've always thought that it's such a silly title and almost passive-aggressive. "You're second in charge, but to make your position seem even less important, we'll suggest you're young and inexperienced". It suits our approach to music - not taking ourselves too seriously.
2. Why do you want to play this genre?
I'm into lots of genres, but my default to songwrite is pop hooks with some interesting chords behind them. Trust me, if I were left unchecked by the other guys, we'd probably have a pedal steel, organ, and fiddle in the band. They keep me on the indie-rock-straight-and-narrow.
3. Did you know each other before?
Steven and I have played in bands since high school, and he was my first person to call when I needed a drummer. Andy joined later after we advertised for a bassist, and it was an instant fit!
4. Where was your last gig?
This was in Bloc in Glasgow. It's a really great, independent venue and bar. They've always got live bands at night, and it's free entry. Plus, they're really generous to new bands.
5. What bands have inspired you the most?
We're influenced by stuff we all grew up listening to, like Pixies, Jimmy Eat World, and Weezer. All of us listen to some variation of indie rock/hard rock and alt stuff. More recently, I've been heavily inspired by MJ Lenderman and Wednesday for their funnily dark lyrics/skuzzy guitar sounds and a real honest energy in terms of songwriting.
6. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright?
No. A combination of Sertraline and borderline narcissistic tendencies means we're all good.
We're still in the infancy of building a fan base, but we've been really happy to have people buying t-shirts at our shows. If our fans are being weird, then we're doing something right, as we're a bit weird/quirky too.
