Interviews: Blossom Cult
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Metal/Progressive Metal band Blossom Cult from Germany. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or did it just come out like that?
Janos: After our old band broke up, Max and I decided to start fresh with a new project. We had a whole vision planned
out, what topics we wanted to write about, and what atmosphere to go for.
So we were searching for a name that combines it all, and when we met one evening to find it, it just revealed itself after
an hour or so of brainstorming.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Max: We play the music that comes naturally to us. We love rock and metal because those genres give us the space to
express real, raw emotion—and for us, that’s what makes music truly meaningful.
We believe that every genre, every instrument, and every sound has its own “raison d’être.” So when we use terms like
“progressive” or “alternative”, it means that we’re free to combine epic orchestras with modern synthesizers, funk
elements with classic rock, or even blast beats with trip-hop rhythms—whenever it feels right.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Janos: Max and I have actually played music together since we were teenagers. We're like an old couple – sometimes we hate
each other, but we can never really separate!
We played and toured in other projects as well, but our paths always meet again.
The other guys are really young still, and we got to know them when they joined Blossom Cult.
Elias uploaded a cover version of our song "Atlas" when we just released our first EP, and we were amazed by his
version.
Since we were looking for a keyboard player anyway, I contacted him, and he ultimately introduced us to his friends Peter
and Maurice, who joined the band as well.
4. Each band member's favourite band?
Janos – Pain of Salvation
Maurice – Steely Dan
Elias – Dream Theater
Peter – Avatar
Max - Kreator
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Janos: For me, the lyrics are an integral part of the music I create.
I'm satisfied with a result if everything comes together as a unity of atmosphere, tension, and emotion in accordance with
the lyrics, like in a musical.
I write the lyrics for our music and tend to think in bigger concepts like albums and even broader themes spanning
several albums.
These days, it's kind of difficult to reach a majority of people like that with lowering attention spans and just a general
overload of available music and entertainment.
So ideally, every song should also work when taken out of that broader concept.
Thematically, I always tend to go back to processing my world weariness in the face of political disputes and the decline of
Western civilization.
It's mostly deeply emotional and personal songs, but painted on a bigger canvas of our modern time and world affairs.
6. Where was your last gig?
Max: We played a local headliner show called “Progressive Carnival” in Duisburg in a place called “Parkhaus Meiderich”
together with “Hole in the Garden” and “Betrayed Innocence”.
7. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
Max: Push through the pain and gain experience—that’s all you can do. Stage fright is part of the game; it means you
take what you do seriously. Don’t try to get rid of it. Learn to handle it and use it as an extra source of energy.
Oh—and practice, of course. There’s no need to be afraid when you know you can trust yourself and your bandmates.
8. What bands have inspired you the most?
Janos: My all-time favorite band is Pain Of Salvation; their music guided me since I was a teenager.
Nowadays, I don't even listen to so much Metal or prog, but still, there are some cool bands in those genres.
I like Avatar, Falling In Reverse, Royal Republic, Bring Me The Horizon recently, also some completely different stuff
like the French folk/pop musician Feloche or pop rock like Talk, or classical music.
It all finds its way into Blossom Cult on some level.
9. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Max: Okay, now we’re going down the rabbit hole… One moment I will personally never forget was when a fan came up
to me after a show, holding her young child in her arms. She handed me some chocolate and said, “My son loves you
more than his own father…”
I saw the kid for maybe two seconds—sorry, dude… I don’t even know you or your son.
10. What do you think of your fans?
Janos: I think the goal is to expand this community of people who understand what we are doing.
It doesn't have to be millions – but I want to find true resonance, people who feel like I feel, and find that in our music.
Let's just say I wanna start a cult.
11. What do you think of our site?
Max: The whole rock and metal scene is fueled by people who love what they do. We’re not that dependent on big
players and labels because we support each other. Your site, in particular, offers the option to find bands by country—I
think that’s an awesome idea.
