Interviews: The Cloverhearts
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Celtic Punk band The Cloverhearts from Australia. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it, or did it just come out like that?
I think I wanted something that was going to be genre-specific, but also true to the type of music I've always gravitated towards, which is love songs and tales of heartbreak. So I started to think about celtic punk and shamrocks and four-leaf clovers, and thought about how my songwriting naturally gravitates towards music with a lot of heart - and here we are! The Cloverhearts.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
I felt like I had done everything I wanted to do with traditional punk and skate punk, and wanted to learn how to write with acoustic and trad instruments. I guess it was the challenge of doing something new and putting my own unique stamp and spin on it. I think it's this very angle that sets us apart from other bands in the genre, too.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
There have been a few lineup changes, so it's hard to say, some yes, some no. Line-up changes have really come from the band's rapid growth, and people with full-time jobs with little vacation time have sadly had to leave as The Cloverhearts started turning into a full-time touring band. Some members were friends before, some members we met through friends, etc.
4. Each band member's favourite band?
(Sorry, can't get everyone to answer quickly, so I will just do mine)
Fiona Apple - I Know
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
I've never considered myself a singer, a guitarist, a bassist - I've always considered myself a songwriter first. Singing or playing guitar, is just the tool to get the music out of me. I've always had the love and knack for writing songs, as long as I can remember, and it kinda just comes naturally. It's my first and one true love. At the end of the day, that's why we're all here - for songs. It's not a fashion parade, or an excuse to play shows and get drunk with your friends. I think a lot of bands forget this, or don't even realize it. I'm inspired when I hear the crowd sing my songs back to me, and I want to always one-up my last song and write better for the people who like my music.
6. Where was your last gig?
HHhhhmm, good question. I believe it was in Berlin, Germany at Hole44 supporting our good friends, Mr. Irish Bastard.
7. Where would you like to act?
Act? Oh, I think I'll just stick to singing, thanks!
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Oh, any of the greats! Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly - I think The Real McKenzies would be the best, realistic fit for a collab for The Cloverhearts though.
9. Whom not?
One or two names spring to mind, but I won't go there!
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
It's funny - generally, not, no stage fright. But if it's a particularly poorly promoted show with a bad turnout, those shows make me nervous. Crowds of thousands are a walk in the park, but there's nothing worse than doing a full 1.5-hour, well-planned and produced show in front of 13 people on a Monday night.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Ooof, great question. NOFX, Rancid, Elliot Smith, Flogging Molly, and Fiona Apple are all pretty inspirational.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Oh, probably just signing weird explicit body parts.
13. What do you think of your fans?
Every band says it, they're the best. I can't say more. They're just amazing. The best.
14. What do you think of our site?
It's awesome!
