Behind The Tracks: Among Legends - Floating Here For Years (Single) (2026)

Mitchell: Familiar Fictions was one of the more complex songs to put together. Sara had a version of the song basically all set to go, but there was one section that I thought was really catchy. It may have been a verse or a pre-chorus, maybe even just an instrumental section - whatever it was, I don't think it was meant to be the focal point. But she was open to reworking the structure so we could give it more spotlight, and it became the intro and verses of the song. From there, we were able to rework the baseline music, fit in the drum stuff Sara was envisioning, and then we put Tyler to work in figuring out how to get the guitars right. He found a blend of more driving guitars in the intros and choruses, and worked out some cool spacey stuff in the verses and bridge - including an amazing solo near the end of the song. Sara originally wrote the vocals at the end for me to sing on my own, but I couldn't get enough breath to do it, so on the day of recording, we decided to switch it and have her, and I trade off between lines. I can't speak for Sara, but I had a great time figuring out what to do with this song, and I'm really happy with how it turned out!

Sara: I really, really love this song - what started as some aimless noodling on the guitar turned into one of my highlight tracks on the new album. The working title for this song was "Weird Chord Song" because it was built around a guitar melody that got wrapped up into some slightly more interesting chords than we typically use. As Mitchell mentioned above, it took some work to fully flesh out the structure of this one. I had played around with different parts, at some point even incorporating a more skate punk style drum beat, before the two of us settled into the general structure that you hear on the album. Sections got rearranged, the entire chorus chord progression was rewritten, but eventually we got there, and I think the work paid off. I really love the ooohs in the chorus - we worked those out while demoing this song, and I think they complement that part super well. I also think Tyler - our guitarist at the time - totally nailed the guitar at the end of the song. I wanted something sort of spacey, but also interesting enough to drive that section, and he came up with the perfect part. I was listening to a lot of Fiddlehead while writing this song, and the ending vocal part is definitely inspired by them - as much as I'm reluctant to sing at *any* time, I think the trade-off between Mitchell and me sounds great.

Lyrically, this song is about the internal conflict that arises when you're sort of desperate to say something to someone - and you think they might already know what you want to say - but the consequences of actually saying the thing seem overwhelming. It's so hard to know whether or not it's better to just be honest despite the risk, especially when the relationship at the centre of all of this is an important one. Words can't be unsaid, and agonizing over whether they should be said at all can be a sort of all-consuming series of thoughts. I'm really happy with how the lyrics turned out - I tried to be a little more abstract than I might normally be, which might have helped tackle a pretty personal topic, and I think pushing myself a bit outside of my lyrical comfort zone probably worked out.
