Behind The Tracks: KNIGHTRESS - Unbecoming (Single) (2026)

Unbecoming is a pivotal song for KNIGHTRESS, as it’s the first song we arranged together as a band after I relocated to Paris. I had left everything in the States behind to follow this deep soul calling to move to Paris and reform my band. Within six months, we were in the studio as KNIGHTRESS, the lineup now complete with heavyweight French musicians, recording Unbecoming at Studio Sainte-Marthe with Francis Caste.

I think the sound really exemplifies our synergy and the deep, expansive palette we draw from as a group. There’s a heaviness and an unshakeable foundation in the rhythm section, and really in all of the players, that came from following that soul knowing, taking a massive leap of faith to relocate here with no foundation present, and finding these musicians, promptly and synchronistically. I had never had a sound this heavy. I was always reaching for it in California, but could never quite get there. This song came together so effortlessly and ended up having so much weight, while still leaving a huge amount of space for the violin and vocal to hang above it in these long melodic lines.

The song is rooted in themes that are always at the core of my lyrics and composition. This one is about breaking free from societal conditioning, from the programmed and sleeping world, into a state of complete sovereignty and liberation. That process can feel maddening and isolating. People start reacting to you as if you’re crazy. You begin to see things from a more polarizing point of view, and once you’ve reached that place of seeing the world for what it is, you can never unsee it.

Now your ship is in deep waters, and you have no choice but to repeatedly stabilize yourself in an untethered, turbulent field. This is at the core of my writing with KNIGHTRESS: waking up and embodying our true power as humans so we can shake free from this imprisoned world.

Another crucial part of these lyrics, as you hear in the line “do you steal love,” is sexual violence. This is something that has profoundly affected my life, and one of the reasons I put it so strongly into my music is because Knightress and I, chasing this massive dream I have, have saved my life countless times from the devastation of these acts. I believe in my core that the perpetrators of these unforgivable acts, though they may walk through this world with seeming impunity, carry the weight of the misery they have inflicted like a noose around the neck of their soul. Gravity will come for them one day.

Everyone must reckon with the consequences of their actions. This is the reckoning we are in now. What was once hidden is being revealed. Everything will be laid bare.

Creating this video with the remarkable Julien Metternich was another important part of bringing these ideas to life. We use strong visual symbolism to represent being hunted, psychic imprisonment, and innate royalty - not royalty in the sense of bloodline, but the true royalty of human beings when we are fully connected to our innate design.

We also had the privilege of Robespierre Baker’s presence as the embodiment of psychic imprisonment. He does such a fantastic job, both vocally and in the video, and it was a pleasure to work with him.

We are proud of this song as a group and are happy to be setting it free into the world. We hope it brings you a deep sense of resonance and reminds you, at your core, that you are immensely powerful and innately worthy simply because you exist.
