This is the story of a spirit lost in space. Within the concept of the album, it belonged to a buckrider who had been executed. The bass chords at the end served as the starting point for this song. A part of the words was written during a funeral service. It served as the starting point for the lyrics.
2. Through the Veil:
A tale of a buckrider hanged for witchcraft. Dangling from a tree in the fog, he awakens in the frost and remembers what happened to him before he gasps his last breath. The first song the band actually finished writing.
3. Fires in the Fens:
The story of the “Spirits of the Swamp”: the spirits of buckriders hanged for witchcraft and whose bodies were discarded in the High Fens. The first song the band started writing – and the last one to be finished for the album!
4. Walpurgisnacht:
A tale of witchcraft in which Lucifer is a strong positive symbol, a light in the dark. Musically, it is a good example of the band's blend of doom and black metal.
5. Revenge:
A song about mental illness and revenge. In the framework of the album, it depicts a buckrider seeking revenge for what he suffered.
6. Falling:
A spoken word with a simple ambient layer, bringing to life a horrid vision of one’s own death.
7. Putrefy:
An introspective song on the finitude of life, on suffering, and dying.
8. Kvöldsöngur:
Initially meant as a short interlude to precede “Valley of shadows” this acoustic instrumental – written in the dead of winter of the second pandemic year – unfolded as a full track. Just one dry acoustic guitar, some rain, and a lot of sadness.
9. Valley of Shadows:
With its catchy main riff and fierce lyrics, “Valley of Shadows” is one of the most positive tracks of the album, a way out of the dark, into the light. A song about rebirth.
10. The River:
The album’s closing and longest track. Beginning very slowly, this dystopian, apocalyptic vision unfolds through crushing doom riffs before shifting into a raw acoustic section, accompanied by a narrated passage and the sound of liquid lava slowly creeping forward. It culminates in a furious black metal finale, merging with the thunder of a devastating volcanic eruption and the relentless sound of lava continuing to creep forward.
